The newborn stage is a whirlwind — emotional, fleeting, and full of moments you wish you could freeze in time. That’s exactly why newborn photography exists: to help you hold onto what slips through your fingers so quickly.

This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you feel prepared, confident, and supported during your session at Ina Long Photography.

To make this guide easy to navigate, I’ve included quick links below. Feel free to click any section to go exactly where you need.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?

The ideal time for photos is 6–14 days after birth when babies are naturally curly and sleepy. But if your baby is older — don’t worry. I adjust everything to meet your baby where they are.

Most families book in their second trimester, but I always try to fit in last-minute newborns when possible.

Before Your Session: What to Know

1. You’ll get a prep guide + a day-before checklist.

I know what mom brain feels like — the mental load is real.

That’s why you’ll get:

✔ A detailed prep guide after booking

✔ A simple checklist the day before your session

This takes the pressure off you and ensures nothing gets forgotten.

2. You don’t need to bring outfits. I provide everything.

My studio includes:

  • wraps

  • bonnets

  • props

  • baby outfits

  • maternity gowns

  • sibling & parent styling guidance

You literally just bring your baby.

3. Feed baby right when you get here.

A full tummy = a sleepy, relaxed baby.

If baby needs another feed at the studio, we pause — slow and gentle is the entire rhythm of newborn sessions.

4. Keep baby awake for 1–2 hours before your session.

Bath time, diaper changes, gentle stimulation — all help your little one arrive ready for deep sleep.

5. Dress baby in a simple zip-up sleeper.

No onesies or extra layers.

This keeps transitions easy and keeps baby comfortable.

What to Expect During Your Newborn Session

A Calm, Warm, Baby-Led Environment

I use shushing sounds, which mimic the womb and help babies settle quickly. This is a newborn-specific soothing method that works beautifully.

The studio is warm, calm, and structured specifically for newborn comfort.

I Use the “5 S’s” When Needed

If your baby needs help settling, I gently use Dr. Harvey Karp’s newborn soothing techniques:

Swaddle

Side/Stomach (for soothing, not sleeping)

Shush (I use this throughout sessions)

Swing (gentle, micro-movement)

Suck (if parents approve of a pacifier)

I follow your baby’s cues and adapt instantly.

Baby-Led Posing

Your baby guides everything.

If baby:

  • is awake → we wrap and pose safely

  • is fussy → we soothe

  • needs a break → we pause

  • wants to be held → I let you snuggle

Nothing is forced. Ever.

Parents & Siblings

We do sibling and family photos first so little ones can take a break afterward. I guide parents into natural, connected poses that feel real — not stiff or awkward.

Safety Comes First

With years of experience and hundreds of newborns photographed, I use:

✔ regulated temperature

✔ hand-supported posing

✔ sanitized props

✔ safe, ergonomic setups

✔ never forcing a baby into a pose they resist

Your baby’s comfort and safety are my priority.

What to Bring

You don’t need much:

✔ extra bottles / formula

✔ diapers & wipes

✔ pacifier (optional but very helpful)

✔ snacks and drinks for parents

✔ a change of clothes just in case

After Your Session: The Ordering Appointment

Within a few days, we’ll schedule your ordering appointment (virtual or in-person).You’ll see your edited images and choose:

  • albums

  • framed wall art

  • matted print boxes

  • digital collections

  • gifts for grandparents

I help with design, sizing, and placement. Nothing is rushed.

The Part No One Talks About: Preparing Emotionally

You’re postpartum.

You’re tired.

Your body is recovering.

Your hormones are everywhere.

You do not need to look perfect. You only need to show up.

I guide you gently and pose you in flattering, natural ways that honor your connection with your baby.

Your baby doesn’t care about your hair or your outfit.

They care that you’re there — and one day, they’ll cherish these images more than you can imagine.

Final Tips for a Seamless Experience

✨ Give yourself extra time — don’t rush.

✨ Trust the baby-led process.

✨ Let go of expectations — your baby runs the show.

✨ Relax… truly. I handle everything.

These early moments are sacred.

Let me help you remember them beautifully.
